What are your Values?
Your values should be one of the driving forces in deciding how to invest your money. But what are your values? Surely, you need security and long term stability in your portfolio. Also, you want to be smart about opportunities and take advantage of your particular knowledge and decision making, a smart investor. All sound financial values. But there's more. Socially responsible investing offers you the opportunity to explore how your social, moral, and ethical values can be expressed in your investment decisions. Most of us do not want to do harm. Can we find companies that conform to this value? Of course we can! Are you concerned about the environment (you better be)? That's an easy one. But what if you wish to use faith based values, social justice values such as native lands protection, or local community values? Then use them! The realm of SRI has options for you. The key ingredient is that it's your personal value. Your values come from deep within, so think about it, now the challenge is for you to understand your values and how you wish to express them in your financial decision making.
