Obama: "Responsibility"
In his inaugural address President Obama mentioned responsibility three times, most notably by declaiming "a new era of responsibility." Yesterday, the President called Wall Street bankers "irresponsible" and their acts "shameful." (nytimes.com)
"Responsible" is our middle name here at sRiplanner.com (at least our middle initial). The President is addressing and supporting the core value of socially responsible investing, responsibility! What's more, he is performing good governance AND he is calling for it. I really would rather bludgeon the bank bonuses... I mean, really..
Instead, I'll close with the clips from the inaugural address which mention responsibility especially because each usage invokes the different realms in which responsibility is imperative.
"Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age."
"We'll begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan."
and the clincher
"What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility -- a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character than giving our all to a difficult task."
